What does "Handmade" Mean?
This is the No. 1 question I get asked, what exactly does "handmade" mean? Of course there is no one right answer, and it's also completely relative to the crafter, but I do have an answer for my jewelry; I hand make everything I possibly can from the most basic materials I can obtain.
The items that I do purchase finished are cabochons, the stones, chains and patterned wires. If I had the equipment and knowledge to create these then I would be, this is one of my few long-term goals.
Other than the mentioned items, I create everything by hand. Every cuff bracelet is hand sawed, every bezel cup is constructed using sheet metal and bezel wire, and every ring shank is measured, shaped and filed to make a flawless fit.
I have discovered that a lot of people thought I create my jewelry pieces by setting a stone into a ring that I purchased, and when I explained the process some seemed to not believe me. You cut this out with that saw? You use an acetylene torch? This started out as a flat sheet of sterling silver? Yep.
This post is a really good segue into another topic that I'm sure to write about in the near future. Handmade jewelry, truly handmade jewelry is expensive, it should be expensive. But like I said, that is a whole nother blog article...or 2.
To all the other crafters, really think about what "handmade" means to you and how you advertise your products. My customers are my priority and I make sure they know what they are getting, what my process is and know I back up my work. When it comes to working with your customers, honesty isn't the best policy, it is the only policy.
It's a tough question to ask yourself but do your customers really get what they believe they are getting?
